Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey and Australia (MIKTA) meet at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul

MIKTA ministers and senior officials responsible for international development and humanitarian response met in the margins of the inaugural World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul on 23 May, 2016.

Senator the Hon Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific, hosted the Humanitarian Dialogue as MIKTA Chair.  The Dialogue was attended by Mexico’s Legal-Advisor-at-Large, Alejandro Alday; Indonesia’s Deputy Minister for Multilateral Affairs, Hassan Kleib; Republic of Korea’s Deputy Director General of Foreign Affairs, Lee Jae-wan and Turkey’s Deputy Under Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Levent Burhan.

This was the first time MIKTA representatives have come together to discuss global humanitarian issues, exchange views on the impacts of humanitarian emergencies in their regions, and discuss how the global system could respond more effectively to the growing demands placed upon it by more frequent and complex crises.

Building on areas of established MIKTA cooperation, the group also discussed the importance of strong international coordination in effective disaster response and of protecting the rights and advancing the interests of women and girls in crises.

MIKTA delegates announced MIKTA-specific commitments at the Announcement Plenary, Leaders’ Roundtable on Natural Disasters and Climate Change and the Leaders’ Roundtable on Women and Girls.

MIKTA countries will build a concerted program of action and advocacy to support accelerated implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction within our regions; and will work to advance the relevant outcomes of the World Humanitarian Summit, to maintain momentum and ensure the success of the Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction in Cancun, Mexico, in May 2017.
