Indonesian Students Welcome MIKTA Goes to Campus at Universitas Indonesia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and Universitas Indonesia co-hosted the first ever MIKTA Goes to Campus (MGTC). “MIKTA Goes to Campus is one of the initiatives to further introduce MIKTA to the public, especially amongst students and academics, and to promote Indonesia’s Coordinatorship in MIKTA”, as explained by the Director General for Multilateral Cooperation, Febrian A. Ruddyard at the MGTC event at Universitas Indonesia on 8 February 2018. The MGTC event will be held at various universities throughout Indonesia as part of the outreach and people-centred programs.

Indonesia is this year’s Coordinator of MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Korea, Turkey and Australia) and has brought “Fostering Creative Economy and Contributing to Global Peace” as its theme. This theme is in line with Indonesia’s efforts to maintain global peace and security, in which Indonesia is currently a candidate to the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2019-2020. In addition, the theme gives particular emphasis on the important role of creative economy towards growth and development.

“Today’s MIKTA Goes to Campus event is aimed at providing an avenue to promote the importance of MIKTA cooperation in addressing various global challenges”, as highlighted by the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Arie Setiabudi Soesilo, M.Sc in his opening remarks.

The MGTC’s Talk Show taking the Davos-style format presents the Director General for Multilateral Cooperation, Ambassador of Mexico, and representatives of the Embassies of South Korea, Turkey and Australia, and involves the participation of academics and think tanks to seek inputs on enhancing the role of MIKTA as well as its cooperation platform globally. Also present at this event hundreds of Indonesian students and academics from various universities, such as Universitas Nasional, Universitas Prof. Dr. Moestopo (Beragama), Universitas Darussalam Gontor, and Universitas Al Azhar Indonesia.

Some topics discussed at the MGTC includes flagship programs during each MIKTA country’s chairmanship, MIKTA’s achievements as well as its opportunities and main challenges, and prospect for future MIKTA cooperation. Speakers at this event underlined MIKTA’s considerable potential to promote openness, provide significant influence in each of their respective regions, as well as act as global policy broker and hub of global networks of multi-stakeholders. “Flexibility, informality and diversity of MIKTA are the strengths and modalities to achieve global prosperity, stability and peace”, mentioned Rahimah Abdulrahim, Executive Director of The Habibie Centre.

“MIKTA is the embodiment of Mexico’s commitment as one of the champions of innovative international initiatives”, said Mexico’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Armando Gonzalo Álvarez Reina after sharing Mexico’s experience as MIKTA’s first Coordinator.

Indonesia has also hosted the 4th MIKTA Senior Officials’ Meeting in Yogyakarta on 24-25 January 2018. Other activities in 2018 include the 2nd MIKTA Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue, MIKTA Workshop on Women and Peacekeeping, MIKTA Workshop on Counter Terrorism and De-radicalization, MIKTA Tourist Operators’ Network, and MIKTA Start-up Fest. “The purpose of holding such activities is as a catalyst to promote social and economic development in Indonesia’, added the Director General for Multilateral Cooperation.
