Yogyakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia begins its Coordinatorship in MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia) for 2018 by holding the 4th MIKTA Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) in Yogyakarta on 24-25 January 2018.  Indonesia’s Coordinatorship taking “Fostering Creative Economy and Contributing to Global Peace” as its theme emphasizes the role of creative economy as one of the economic growth’s sources. In addition, the theme is also in line with Indonesia’s various contributions to the global peace efforts, in which Indonesia currently nominates itself as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2019-2020.

The 4th MIKTA SOM was opened and chaired by the Director General for Multilateral Cooperation, Febrian A. Ruddyard, as Indonesia’s Senior Official in MIKTA, and attended by delegates from Mexico, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia. The meeting discussed MIKTA’s potential future cooperation, MIKTA’s role in responding to various regional and global issues, and preparation for the 12th MIKTA Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

A number of recent global issues were discussed at the meeting, including the question of Palestine, sustainable development, UN reform, and North Korea. “As a group of middle powers, MIKTA is highly relevant to the multipolar dynamics and has the potential to strengthen global order”, Director General for Multilateral Cooperation stated.

MIKTA’s Senior Officials also support Indonesia’s endeavour in developing creative economy leading up to the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) in Bali on 4-6 May 2018 and MIKTA Side Event on Creative Economy on the sidelines of WCCE. Indonesia is also recognized for its success in countering terrorism, and peacekeeping commitment among others through the deployment of 38,000 peacekeeping’s personnel. This is in line with the theme of Indonesia’s Coordinatorship in MIKTA.

MIKTA delegates also had the opportunity to visit Kepatihan Yogyakarta for a courtesy call and dinner with the Vice Governor of Yogyakarta, Paku Alam X. At the end of the 4th MIKTA SOM, the delegates also enjoyed cultural dinner facing Prambanan Temple and the Ramayana Ballet performance.

Indonesia will organize a number of activities within MIKTA framework throughout 2018. Several programs to support Indonesia’s priorities as the Coordinator of MIKTA include MIKTA Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue, MIKTA Workshop on Women and Peacekeeping, MIKTA Forum on Enhancing Cooperation on Creative Economy/Start Up Fest, and MIKTA Workshop on Counter-Terrorism and Deradicalization.

Indonesia also takes the initiative to hold several outreach programs such as MIKTA Goes to Campus and MIKTA Fun Walk and Charity Bazaar. In the near future, Indonesia will hold MIKTA Goes to Campus at the University of Indonesia on 8 February 2018 and MIKTA Policy Planning Consultations in Surabaya on 21 February 2018. “Such activities are expected to socialize MIKTA further to the wider community and optimize Indonesia’s role in MIKTA”, Director General for Multilateral Cooperation said.
