MIKTA Tourism Message 2018
Introduction
Representatives of Mexico, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia (MIKTA) concluded the meeting on “Building MIKTA’s Network on Sustainable Tourism for Development” held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on 8-9 August 2018. The objectives of the meeting were to strengthen collaboration, identify relevant areas of cooperation, and to establish a MIKTA Sustainable Tourism Network between experts in the tourism sector and other relevant stakeholders in MIKTA countries.
Representatives of MIKTA countries welcomed the outcomes of the MIKTA Tourism Message 2018 and expressed their gratitude to the Government of Indonesia as host of the meeting and concurrently as coordinator of MIKTA in 2018.
Building MIKTA’s Tourism Network
In building up MIKTA’s tourism network, representatives have identified a number of relevant areas of cooperation in attaining sustainable tourism for development in line with achieving the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Areas of cooperation as discussed among MIKTA countries included:
Challenges and opportunities for MIKTA countries in developing sustainable tourism;
Digital tourism, in particular the role of technological revolution including digital technology and social media in marketing, managing, experiencing and monitoring tourism;
Destination management and quality, focusing on community-based tourism development, innovation and the use of appropriate technology in tourism resource management, and building partnerships between government, industry and academia as well as other relevant stakeholders.
Way Forward
To further extend cooperation in the tourism sector among MIKTA countries, representatives agreed to continue their efforts to collaborate in the tourism sector.
To exchange best practices and lessons learned, MIKTA countries could bring forward deliverable activities for the group, such as a MIKTA Village Tourism Exchange Network, MIKTA Tour Operators Network, MIKTA Tourism Awards, Sustainable Tourism Certification, Tourism Infrastructure Investment, and Health and Thermal Tourism.
