MoFA RI Hosted the 2nd MIKTA Policy Planning Consultation in Surabaya

Surabaya, Indonesia: As part of Indonesia’s coordinatorship activities, Policy Analysis and Development Agency (BPPK) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (KEMLU) held the 2nd MIKTA Policy Planning Consultation (PPC) at JW Marriott Hotel, Surabaya, on Wednesday (21/2). That meeting was aimed at discussing MIKTA’s strategic role in global governance and mapping potential new areas of cooperation among MIKTA member countries. The meeting was attended by delegates from MIKTA member countries at directorate general levels and chaired by Dr. Siswo Pramono, Head of BPPK KEMLU.

 

The meeting was started by expressing deepest condolences for the victims and their families of the recent earthquake in Southern Mexico where at least 14 people were killed and hundreds are displaced from their homes. The meeting underlined MIKTA’s great potentials to play an important role in the dynamics of global politics and economy. MIKTA member countries have a total population of over 500 million people and a total GDP of about USD 5.6 billion. The total trade value of the five countries with the world reached USD 1.5 trillion in 2016. The five member countries have strong domestic markets, moderate inflation, and productive middle class society. Furthermore, they are all G20 members and active in international and regional cooperation.

 

MIKTA PPC itself is a platform for exchanges on strategic assessments of international and regional situations and the role of MIKTA in international governance. MIKTA members noted with satisfaction the expansion of scope and activity that indicates

MIKTA’s potential to become an important minilateral platform on the changing global order. MIKTA has presented three distinctive paths of development which makes it a unique platform: the inclusiveness of issue; bottom-up approach; and informality. The meeting identifies some potential areas of cooperation under MIKTA frameworks, among thers on cyber security; sustainable development; peacekeeping and peacebuilding, renewable energy, counter terrorism, and e-commerce. During the meeting, MIKTA members also reiterated their support for activities under Indonesia’s coordinatorship this year, such as Book Launch “MIKTA: Current Situation and the Way Forward,” Workshop on Women and Peacekeeping, Workshop on Counter Terrorism and Deradicalisation, and MIKTA side-event on creative economy on the sidelines of World Conference on Creative Economy.

 

After the meeting concluded, delegates visited “KORIDOR” co-working space. KORIDOR is an initiative of the Surabaya City Government to create a space for local entrepreneurs and creators to gather and innovate. This initiative is aimed to explore the potential of digital entrepreneurship in Surabaya. During the visit, Dr. Hari Santosa Sungkari, Deputy of Infrastructure of the Creative Economy Agency (BEKRAF), delivered a presentation on the development of Indonesia’s start-up sector and the potential for international collaboration on creative economy.

 

Dr. (HC) Tri Rismaharini, Mayor of Surabaya, hosted the dinner for the delegates. In her remarks, Bu Risma underlined what Surabaya has been doing to improve engagements with the international community. For example, Surabaya has developed reliable and transparent access to information about investing in the city so that foreign companies can have a clear understanding of the process involved. She hoped that this gathering may become a beginning for further collaboration between Surabaya and other MIKTA members.

Throughout this year, Indonesia serves as the coordinator of MIKTA, an informal partnership forum consisting of Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia. Established in 2013, MIKTA intends to strengthen multilateralism and provide creative solutions to global issues. The main theme of Indonesia’s coordinatorship is “Fostering Creative Economy and Contributing to Global Peace.” (Source: BPPK Kemlu)
