MIKTA Delegation Participates in Indonesian Green Development Policy Discussion in Balikpapan

Balikpapan, Indonesia – “IKN is a manifestation of Indonesia’s efforts to fulfil green and sustainable development”, emphasised by the Director General of Multilateral Cooperation at the MIKTA Forum Group Discussion: Inclusive Recovery Towards Green and Sustainable Future held in Balikpapan, 4-5 May 2023.

This activity is part of a series of outreach programs under Indonesia’s Chairmanship of MIKTA, which are aimed at increasing MIKTA’s visibility to regional stakeholders, as well as encouraging opportunities for cooperation between MIKTA countries. After previously being held in Bandung in March, Balikpapan was then chosen as the host of the outreach to demonstrate Indonesia’s green development policies through leading by example.

The FGD was followed by a visit by MIKTA delegates to the Sungai Wain Protected Forest area and the Balikpapan Botanical Garden to review Indonesia’s carbon and biodiversity potential, as well as an inspection of IKN to see developments in urban planning, utilisation of energy sources and investment opportunities.

The MIKTA delegation who took part in the activity were the Australian and Mexican Ambassadors, as well as representatives of the Turkish and South Korean Embassies, and led by the Director General of Multilateral Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tri Tharyat, representing Indonesia for MIKTA SOM. The FGD was attended by 80 people from various backgrounds, including the ranks of the East Kalimantan Provincial Government Office, representatives of the East Kalimantan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), East Kalimantan branch of BI, as well as youth representatives from the Balikpapan Society of Renewable Energy and East Kalimantan Indonesian Youth Diplomacy.

The series of activities received great appreciation from the MIKTA Delegation, particularly the visits to IKN, which have been used to witness the concept of green and sustainable development in IKN. The visit to the IKN was supported by OIKN and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing through representatives of a number of Offices that were directly involved in the construction of the IKN.

Indonesia has held the MIKTA Chairmanship since 2 March 2023 and raised three priority issues, which are Strengthening Multilateralism, Inclusive Recovery and Digital Transformation. MIKTA, which has members from Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey and Australia, is a forum for middle-power countries that was established in 2013 and has the objective of supporting the strengthening of global governance. MIKTA acts as a consensus-maker and bridge-builder between developing and developed countries.
